Two Kiwi in a Hat

Our Own Kiwi Release

On October 31st 2010 we hosted a community event to release three adult kiwi into our backyard, about seventy people attended. The kiwi were brought here from Limestone Island, a kiwi sanctuary in the Whangarei Harbour. This was organised by Todd Hamilton, who works for our local Land Care group and is also involved in the Backyard Kiwi project.

Todd has been monitoring the birds and he keeps track of where they get to. We still hear birds calling regularly at night, although we are not sure if it's these ones or other resident kiwi.

A new short walk from the lodge!

We have started to mark the track that leads from the Lodge up into the bush behind our home. The track passes the site of our recent kiwi release taking you through native trees in an hour-long loop back to the Lodge.

Our plan is to set up the first section as a night walk and we will provide a table and chairs in a good spot for kiwi listening.
